Thune: Schumer Shutdown Day 14
“Democrats were against shutdowns when it suited their political purposes, and now that it suits their political purposes – they think – to keep the government closed, now they support shutdowns.”
WASHINGTON — U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) today delivered the following remarks on the Senate floor:

Here we go again. Same game new day.
the Republicans should add something to make health insurance more affordable.
Repeal the Affordable Care Act, or just pieces of it, remove the Medical Loss Ratio Rebate provision, and remove the requirement to cover pre-existing conditions.
The ACA caused premiums to go way up. Repeal it, and the premiums will come down, as people switch to more affordable policies.
They only have concepts of a plan. Actually, the plan is for these people to just go away as quietly and quickly as possible.
well it’s fun to watch the Democrats’ wailing about high health insurance costs when everybody who actually read the ACA saw this coming.
As Pelosi said, “we have to pass the bill so you can find out what’s in it.” Now they have found out, they don’t like it, and they want to blame the Republicans.
I still remember VP Biden saying “just wait till next summer when those rebate checks go out!” referring to the Medical Loss Ratio Rebates. When pigs fly, I thought.
Anonymous 4:49 you just rolled off the turnip truck didn’t you. People are locking in their annual insurance renewals right now, nobody gets low-priced anything here in Trump Tariff Tax land. If you want to buy a low-cost policy that doesn’t cover or pay out on anything, be our guest.
Everybody who studied the ACA could see that it was going to make health insurance more expensive.
Among those who studied it were health care system administrators and pharmaceutical companies.
When the ONLY way for an insurance company to increase their bottom line is to charge higher premiums and pay bigger bills, the health care providers and drug companies saw this and realized the money would be flowing. Prices went up.
The Democrats had the idiotic idea that employers would try to increase the rebate of the insurance premiums by improving the health of their employees, with healthier food in their cafeterias, no-smoking policies and gym memberships,
Instead, the employers figured the easiest, least expensive way to increase their Medical Loss Ratio Rebate was by hiring the youngest and healthiest people and getting rid of the rest. There are now youtube and tiktok videos of people in their fifties getting laid off after decades at the same job. Some of us saw that happening too. (Amusingly, VP Biden thought the employers would even share the MLR rebates with their employees. As if!)
The Democrats have only themselves to blame for the ACA.
