Toby Doeden can’t help himself as he selectively edits KELOland story

And fresh off of lying to voters, Toby Doeden apparently can’t stop his campaign’s rutting around in the pig sty as after they chose to selectively edit a KELOland story, causing their actions to become tonight’s top story:

The campaign for Republican gubernatorial candidate Toby Doeden posted a video Friday on social media which was selectively edited to exclude quotes from and a photo of Jon Hansen, another GOP candidate in South Dakota’s 2026 race for the governor’s office.

And..

A campaign spokesperson for Johnson, who currently holds South Dakota’s only seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, sent KELOLAND News a statement: “The irony of a candidate manipulating a news story only to call someone else a liar is not lost on the people of South Dakota.”

And from Governor Rhoden’s campaign..

“I think your tweet already identifies that Doeden is misconstruing your reporting, and it’s pretty clear he’s misconstruing the Governor’s position.”

  1. When is the next campaign finance report due? It would be great to see who Doeden has on his payroll at least that he reports and who is donating to his campaign.

  2. Jon Hansen is a rockstar.

That said Hansen has zero path to win the nomination. A good showing for him will be in the double digits to teens.

If he’s happy with moral victories. He should spend the next 6 months leading his volunteer network to a defeat and taking their focus off the legislature.

I know Doeden’s team thinks Hansen takes votes from them but they could very easily be Rhoden supporters.

Rhoden has put himself in a position to claim the mantle of 1052 and cutting the prison budget $200 million. He has a difficult path to navigate on property taxes but he’s in the catbird seat.

Doeden would also be in a better position if he talked about eliminating “owner occupied” property taxes.

    1. Hansen is a political opportunist. He jumps on the hot topic of the day and convinces people he’s been fighting for that particular cause since its inception. The Maude “crisis” is one in particular. Anyone who followed it knows that rounds and dusty were working it from a federal level, well before Jon bought a pair of boots and a pearl snap button up shirt for his photo op. SMH.

      1. Agree. However, Rhoden told Kristi who tried working with Vilsak to no avail. Attempts continued. Not until Rollins got sworn in did anything happen. Hence the reason Rollins invited Rhoden to DC with the Maude family once settled. The Maude’s are aware of who worked for them.

To your point, Hansen did the same thing with the USD professor, was for DAPL before being against pipelines, voted for the prison with the taskforce before voting against it during the special session (Lems also; they would’ve cried if Rhoden hadn’t even assigned them and that’s what they give in return), and several other topics. Bandwagon jumper and credit taker.

        Straight from Haugaard’s playbook.

  3. Jon Hansen is certainly a rockstar with the guitar, I will pay to watch him wail on his axe, but hate watching him on the house floor. I also saw Brandei use the word “hubris” in an online argument with the housewife spokesperson for the Hansen campaign on a social media page. Anyone who has seen Brandei on the house floor, knows these words are not in her vocabulary unless they are on her script in front of her. My all-time favorite moment of last session was watching her get point of ordered as she defended her landlords honor on the house floor. When she was forced to go off script she made Joe Biden (later years Joe Biden) look like a poet laureate. It was both sad and entertaining. Do you know who uses the word “hubris?’ Well, he’s used the word “huberis” 3 times in the last 9 months on public social media posts, a quick search validates this. He may also be blocked from previous mentioned housewife’s social media group. We may have some lurking in the shadows? On a side note, Rhoden’s article bragging about funneling tax payer dollars to private school was published in our local paper today. It didn’t hit well at my local coffee shop. This governor race is shaping up to be one of the most entertaining ones in recent history.

  4. I know I’m going to be criticize for saying this. I think Toby doing the right thing. He has got to get Jon Hansen out of this race and see where those voters could potentially go to.

The South Dakota News Watch Poll in October showed no bump for Congressman Dusty Johnson after he announced his candidacy compared to May. Governor Rhoden also saw the same numbers but didn’t declare until after the poll. Toby Doeden and Jon Hansen both saw increases in the poll from those who thought Attorney General Jackley might run. Toby from 4% to 15% and Jon from 2% to 10%.(Notice Pat is no longer calling them 4% and 2% on this blog anymore)

The key for now is what that 20% of undecided will go now that Governor Rhoden has announced his run. i’m guessing we will not see another poll out until after the legislative session is over in March.

    1. It is early and the attack ads have not hit yet. Toby Doeden will be an absolute goldmine going after his past history plus the eager testimonials that would emerge from Aberdeen, Brown County and NE South Dakota. The candidates and legislators his PAC endorsed and supported could be included along with associations which have been awful to say the least! Will former NC LT Governor Mark Robinson “I’m a Black Nazi” drive all the way from North Carolina to be a surprise guest at the Western Christmas with the Doedens political event? Being a NAZI and White Supremist is gaining popularity in within MAGA https://www.reuters.com/investigations/american-nazis-aryan-freedom-network-is-riding-high-trump-era-2025-08-08/

After this campaign is flushed down the toilet in 2026, toilet bowl sanitized, exhaust fan run a few days there will still be a lingering stench coming from NE SD. It will be a smoldering dumpster of bitcoin schemes and other business activity that was promoted during the campaign.

  5. Two irrelevant candidates that still haven’t gained any meaningful traction. It’s a race between Rhoden and Johnson. If either Doeden and Hansen were smart, they’d coalesce behind either Rhoden or Johnson and get a cushy appointment in return.

    1. True, but which candidate will these “also-rans” siphon votes from? These two will not be governor, but will both be factors in who will be.

  6. According to Andrew from Team Toby as posted on social media:

    “Dan,

Hopefully you understand that we do appreciate your coverage of the campaign and focus on important issues like property taxes reform.

A slight critique. If you want us to run your story in it its entirety on our social media, perhaps you will consider a higher standard to be included in such coverage.

Speaker Hansen could not be bothered to sit down for your interview in a professional setting. Rather he was walking around on a FaceTime call in his back yard. Likewise, he is polling in the very low single digits. Has virtually no financial resources to fund his campaign, and has no real legitimate campaign infrastructure in place.

If I announce that I am running for Governor will I be included in your coverage as well?

Toby has the most viewed and highest engaged social media account in the state of South Dakota. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that he only publishes content that actual people want to consume.

The clip from your coverage on property taxes that we posted includes the portions that would be relevant to South Dakotans. You might find higher engagement on your own platform if you worked on keeping all of your content relevant.

    -Andrew

    Team Toby”

    1. Andrew forgets to report that 85% of the engagement on Toby’s Facebook page are negative comments about him.

    1. Not sure he gains that much though. For the Rhoden supporters, if he would ask Hansens to be his running mate, would it paint the pic that Rhoden is too close to the loony tune ultra right? I think he may lose some support if he chooses to go that route. It’ll be interesting how people feel about it. I’m 100% not a Hansen fan. Rhoden would be my second pick but not if he’s got Hansen as a running mate.

  7. Hansen knows he can’t win. After the primary, he will run for the AG nomination at the GOP state convention. This has been confirmed by MULTIPLE insiders.

Jon is only trying to split the vote against Toby, which i say kudos to. I don’t support Jon or Toby, but I do support Jon’s political game to split votes away from Toby in the primary.

    1. Hansen isn’t qualified to be the AG. Hoffman has far more experience dealing with”the bad guys” as a states attorney. Hansen just needs to fade into the private sector after his gubernatorial run fails.
