Toby Doeden declares if he’s elected Governor, he will purge military veteran USD Professor from University

Toby Doeden is on Facebook tonight declaring his need to be a cancel queen to remove anyone from higher education he disagrees with.

MEET PROFESSOR TIMOTHY SCHORN.

Last week, I announced that under my administration, South Dakota DOGE would begin the process of auditing our higher education institutions that are receiving state funds. I refuse to allow government dollars to be spent on the indoctrination and radicalization of our young people.

and..

Why are the wonderful and amazing taxpayers of South Dakota having their hard earned money taken from them and given to someone who so openly hates them and the values they hold dear? It is wrong!

Freedom of Speech is a wonderful thing. I am a constitutional conservative and freedom absolutist. I will not, however, stand by and watch our tax dollars be spent paying exorbitant salaries to people who hate our country, insight violence on our leaders, and promote radicalized ideas to our impressionable young people.

and..

Under my leadership, people like Professor Scorn will have no place in the classroom!

Read Toby’s latest screed here.

Regarding Toby’s attack on Dr. Schorn; I know the professor says many things I disagree with. But demanding that he be purged from employment is dangerous territory, as Representative Jon Hansen recently found out in the case of the art professor being returned to employment after a hearing in Federal Court.  You’d think that ‘Dumpster Fire‘ Doeden might have read the news last week before making his declaration?  And we have the part where Toby declares himself a “freedom absolutist?”   That’s a new one. What exactly has Toby Doeden done for the cause of freedom?

Of course, in Doeden’s rant, he goes out on a limb and declares Schorn as among “people who hate our country, insight (sic) violence on our leaders, and promote radicalized ideas to our impressionable young people.”    Aside from his inability to distinguish ‘insight’ from ‘incite’ and other grammatical crimes,  I’m guessing that the ‘freedom absolutist‘ also missed that the professor he claims hates our country is a military veteran:

Dr. Timothy Schorn urged young people attending Vermillion’s Veterans Day service to use the veterans living in the community as an example of the right way to build their characters and help others.

1SG Dr. Timothy Schorn, U.S. Army, retired, is a political science professor at the University of South Dakota.

“I identified with, especially, the veterans of my mom and dad’s generation and those who had come before. They were the people who led the community in service, the village, the township board, the school, the library board, the community club, the parish councils,” he said. “It was these men and women who kept the town and so for those of you who are students, remember this, and look to the veterans who are sitting here in front of you.

“Remember what you can learn from them, as I learned from the veterans when I was growing up,” Schorn said.

and..

“To all of the veterans, to the fellow veterans in front of me, for your service in the military, for your continued service to our community, for your inspiration, for your guidance, for role modeling,” he said, “not just for the students, but for your fellow community members, I say, thank you.”

Read that entire story here.

‘Freedom absolutist’ Toby Doeden wants to fire a military veteran from his job because he doesn’t like what he says on Facebook?  As I said, I know the professor holds views that I don’t agree with. But, especially considering his service to our country, I think he’s earned the right to his opinion.

Otherwise, do we really want to venture on to that slippery slope and start actively purging universities?

Because it appears that Toby Doeden thinks so.

  1. I despise Schorn. Openly pro Hamas and the definition of a globalist. Bad teacher as well. But you can’t call for him to lose his job because one of your staffers got a bad grade in his class. We all know who I am talking about.

    1. Wow, “despise” is awfully strong. And to say I’m pro Hamas is a bit silly. I understand them and can explain them. Kind of my job given I study the Middle East. But I am proudly an internationalist. I own up to what I say and think, and I certainly don’t do it anonymously.

  2. We need to hold these people accountable, especially now when their dangerous rhetoric has our country at a breaking point. The hive needs a good shake and these commies need a wakeup call. That being said, Toby Doeden is a talker who has probably never watched a Charlie Kirk video in his life, and he probably should. Its becoming really pathetic watching him, Hansen, and Johnson clamoring for credit for deeds that our Governor is getting done quietly from the Captain’s chair without a second thought. Larry Rhoden will be a shoe-in when the primary comes around. The rural vote will dominate the rest of the competition. We are tired of MAGA loonies like Toady Doughbin, and fed up with career politicians like Dusty Johnson. We don’t need another career politician, we don’t need a MAGA populist, what we need is a cowboy who walks the walk. When all is said and done, Rhoden is the only man for the job.

    1. Wow. Sounds like someone from Larry office wrote this – probably because they are worried they are going to lose their job

  3. I took multiple classes from Dr Schorn back in the day and he was a straight shooter. Half the class thought he was a Republican and half thought he was a Democrat. I think that is a good sign as to how well he teaches his subject. What he says on his personal Facebook page is private speech and should not be the business of a wanna-be governor like Toby.

  4. Toby Doeden is part of a weird group of Libertarian activists in Brown County that call themselves Republican so they have a far better chance of getting elected that want all the public taxpayer benefits of government for themselves but not for others. Laws that apply to others but not themselves. They talk a big game on freedom for me but not for thee. Self serving power rather than for the greater good.

    1. He said he had not been involved in politics before a year or so ago. Not sure he’s voted more than once in his life. How long have you known him to be part of this Libertarian group?

  5. Military service alone we should compare what Timothy Schorn has accomplished to rise to the rank of SFC (E7) taking the oath, putting his life on the line, sacrifices made and years of service compared to well known “screw off” Toby Doeden over the years. There would be plenty of enthusiastic testimonials from Brown County residents on this.

When someone is known as “a screw-off,” it’s a slang term that means they are a lazy, irresponsible person who often avoids work or their obligations. This term is also used to describe a loafer or idler.

    1. For military service, yes, he should get a hat tip for that. But to say he put his life on the line is a bit of a stretch. Straight from the Facebook page concerning his retirement from the SD Guard:

” Schorn’s military career as a tuba player includes active duty service with the 8th I.D. Band in Germany and the 389th Army Band in Monmouth, N.J. He joined the 147th Army Band in 1997.”

I didn’t realize playing a tuba was such dangerous duty. Ha Ha Ha!

      1. You sign on the line and take the oath yeah you could put one’s life on the line whether in the rear or the front during war time.. Regardless of our MOS they are trained to fight with weapons if need be. No way would I denigrate anyone’s mission specialty in our armed forces.

        1. Ya, as stated above, give him credit for serving in the Army and SD Guard.

But the harsh truth is, MOS 02F isn’t a category that is realistically associated in the way of having to put your life on the line while doing your assigned job.

Try selling that thought to an Apache pilot.

          1. I knew serving in an infantry division during the Cold War and learning how to drive an M60A3 tank in Baumholder wasn’t going to get me anywhere. All that time in a MOPP suit for nothing. But I kept the Soviets out of West Germany in the early 80s. 🤣 Who knew I needed the Soviets to invade to be a real soldier.

            1. Thank you for serving Timothy Schorn! My last unit was part of what they touted as the largest armored division in the free world and they were M60A3 tanks while regular army had the new Abrams in Europe and the Bradleys were coming into service. My unit was a heavy maintenance unit similar to the one in Mitchell. We would most likely would have been targeted in Europe like other units.

          2. If there is a war will an adversary only strike the front if possible? Strikes can occur anywhere in the rear whether we are talking Europe, Asia or what they are experiencing in Ukraine. We knew this before Ukraine for those of us growing up and serving during the Cold War. Air, missile strikes or sabotage. Now we see drone warfare. Making use of core training, years of leadership and various schools/cross training helping with adaptability is a strength. Band player one moment and switching duties another where needed depending on the scenario.

  6. Toby doesn’t sound this silly in his ads. The true Toby comes through on social media, and it is scary.

  7. Doeden and his disciples (Brandei, Manhart, Dennert) are just as distinguished with their rhetoric as this professor.
Maybe Schorn doesn’t deserve his job but neither does Doeden deserve the job he seeks for the same reason.

  8. Did Toby Doeden serve in any branch of the military anywhere for any period of time? Army? Navy? National Guard? SD Air Guard? Etc.?

    1. If Toby had taken the ASVAB test in high school every Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine recruiter would have taken one look at his score and laughed at him

  9. Tim Schorn is an ass now, just as he was when he went to then Mount Marty College in the 80’s.

    1. I remain consistent, “Anonymous”, though I notice you could only say what you did anonymously.

  10. Worth noting Schorn was the USD college Republican advisor when Dusty Johnson was at USD. He still as of 2020 had Reagan and Bush campaign memorabilia in his office.

  11. “Insight (sic) violence on our leaders”

Perhaps Toby should have spent more time on his own education.

  12. “Freedom of Speech is a wonderful thing. I am a constitutional conservative and freedom absolutist.”……..However, as governor, I will make sure to censure the voices I don’t like and take one big Doeden dump on the 1st Amendment.

  13. Toby…..

Sit down and let the adults handle this.

Freedom of speech for the far right only….not for anyone else?

10 years in the SD Legislature and I support our educators and our veterans AND those who exercise their rights, no matter what.

    Be quiet Toby.

  14. Free Speech to these types means you are free to follow their lead on everything from religion to philosophy to opinions on, well, anything, or else.

The Big Tent of the GOP is full of litmus testing morons these days checking ticket stubs for admission.

  15. This just in, republicans get a lesson in free speech and how that differs when you are employed in the private sector versus the public sector. The republican fascists are getting brave.
