  3. IMO Thune is showing his inability to be an effective leader. Tantrums get us nowhere, negotiations do. True leadership is working across the aisle, not refusing to. The Rs thinking that Dems should ‘take their word for it’ on willingness to discuss ACA subsidies is absurd.

    1. LOL! This is rich considering Schumer’s tantrum today and basically every day that he gets in front of a camera. What’s absurd is Democrats openly admitting using hunger and suffering as leverage, per the recent statements of Clark, Schumer, and Sanders. What’s absurd is the Dem mantra: “Never let a good crisis go to waste.” What’s absurd is Dems demanding funding for tons of pork/totally unnecessary spending while 42 million people are about to go hungry. What’s absurd is 13 opportunities to reopen the government with Dems consistently voting NO every time with the exception of the respectable John Fetterman, who has reasonably stated shutdowns are not the way to force one party to accept another party’s demands for $1.5 trillion in spending. You wholly blame Republicans for asking for trust on negotiations post-CR, which is a temporary stop-gap measure as opposed to a full reopening, in case you forgot. Get your facts straight, will you?

If there’s a Schumer tantrum post, I’d call that as I see it too. Admittedly, since Thune is OUR representation in Senate, South Dakotans should be extra critical of his actions. Thune’s actions are not a reflection of traditional SD values.

        As the Senate majority leader, its on Thune as “leader” to act as such. Flat out refusing to negotiate is not leadership. Playing the blame game while Americans suffer is not leadership, it’s political theater.

        Did you know 2 things can be true at once? Rs and Dems can both be asshats at the same time. Blind following of either side is how our nation suffers. Our SD Senators are going to be the ones critiqued by me, they’re doing a shit job, I don’t care that they happen to be republican.

      REP: Dems need to approve the budget we overporked for billionaires, AND THEN we will quickly give them the things which we intentionally left out of the budget – but first you MUST approve the budget version without SNAP and AHA subsidies. Besides, the House is in hiding so it’s impossible to change this bill in any way so help us pass it.
      DEM: If you can’t HEAR how stupid your argument is, then actually write it out and SEE how stupud it is. WE DONT TRUST YOUR LAME PROMISES, TRUMP TOLD YOU TO LIE TO US to get the budget passed.

After all, isn’t that what the dems were talking about needing a few years back? And the lead sewage technician for the Midwest’s septic tank, aka DFP, said it himself, “If 9 justices are good, then 21 would be even better.” Seems to me he would be 100% behind this one. So what do you say dems, want the Republicans to go this route? Ya, I thought you probably wouldn’t.

          So why don’t you dems just shut the hell up and start putting pressure on the slugs on your side of the aisle and get the government reopened.

  6. This is becoming an interesting battle. Dems have had their people screaming at them to “do something.” And they are doing something. All political rhetoric aside, has anybody heard what Thune has to say to those people who will see rate increases?

  7. Obamacare was passed by the dems, knowing that the original subsidies and plan were unworkable. Then covid hit and they added more subsidies, which are the subsidies the dems now admit are necessary to keep obamacare affordable. Obamacare was never meant to work, and now it is becoming apparent that it is unsustainable without additional subsidies. This is the dems problem.

      What a lot of people are missing is that the Democratic Party is the party of the wealthy, while the working class is voting for Republicans.
      The Democrats claim to care about the poor, while the Republicans are the poor. The Blue precincts are the wealthy precincts, and they actually brag about it.

      And since the poor aren’t going to vote for them anyway, the Democrats are okay with starving them.

      1. ACA was a start and way more than Republicans have ever proposed for the health care crisis in America. Republicans just have concepts of a plan after 9 years. Republicans can’t govern and only look to line their pockets & those of their rich friends.

        2. The health care crisis was created by the government
          Things were going ok, hospitals were operated by charities and municipalities to enhance the quality of life in a community. They were not expected to be any more profitable than the public schools.

          Until Medicare. The government decided to get involved and instituted Medicare
          The influx of money into healthcare was like blood in the water to sharks. The wrong people got involved, they didn’t care if the patients lived or died, they were there to get rich.
          Immediately Medicare costs soared to ten times what was originally projected. The nuns, pink ladies and candy-stripers were booted out, in favor of employees whose loyalties were to their employers, not the patients.
          Medicaid was next, and prices for healthcare continued to soar. Hospital administrators, once paid little more than honorariums, started demanding 6 and then 7-figure compensation packages. Hospitals and clinics, once austere facilities of sterility and efficiency, turned into glorious palatial monuments.
          The crisis continued to escalate, so the next step was the Affordable Care Act.
          And as usual, with every government intervention which preceded it, things got worse..

Maybe we aren’t all so black and white; maybe we need to look at issues and policy over the AI messages broadcast in front of our faces 18 hours a day on that little 6″ screen, which are used to manipulate us. It is odd that we all see the need for food, we all know the need for healthcare, but we go down this path of following a manipulated message developed by those who want to control us and we are stuck doing nothing. Democrat, Republican, Independent, whatever, It is coming to a point where we need to start looking at policy and actual needs over these political party messages, or else I fear we will breaking apart the united states.

    1. That was not anger you witnessed. That was hysteria from the immense pressure Thune is getting from people who actually voted for him. First, it’s the soybean farmers. Trump screwed that one up. Then, it’s the ranchers. Trump’s screwing their deal up. Now, it’s people standing up for the 75,000 people losing SNAP benefits. Trump has money in contingency funds that could be used, but refuses to use it. This, alongside the 20,000 or so South Dakotans who will not be able to afford their health coverage? That is a LOT of pressure. It’s no wonder the pressure valve popped yesterday.

    For those unaware of the economic shift in the vote, here is the analysis:
    the rich voted blue, the poor voted red.
    After years of believing in the Democrats’ empty promises, the poor aren’t listening to them anymore.
    The Democrats have nothing to lose by cutting off SNAP benefits to Trump supporters.
