Take a look at the article on Politico, about how Democrats are lining up to ride Hillary Clinton’s coat tails, hoping for a boost in the polls:
Her campaign is still in its infancy. The presidential election is nearly 18 months away. But Democrats are already banking on a “Hillary effect,” an anticipated wave that will lift the party’s fortunes up and down the ticket.
Party officials are using Hillary Clinton’s candidacy to recruit candidates at every level of office and employing a simple pitch: Democratic voter turnout tends to be higher in presidential election years — and next year, the former secretary of state’s historic candidacy and formidable organizing efforts will have an especially catalytic effect.
Illinois Rep. Cheri Bustos, a Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee vice chair who’s recruiting women to run for the House, has been convening bimonthly dinners with a group of other female members of Congress and potential future colleagues. She estimates she’s brought half a dozen candidates to the dinners so far — and the topic regularly turns to Clinton.
“A lot of the time the conversation goes to how Hillary Clinton is likely to be at the top of the ticket and how that will be helpful for the candidate,” Bustos said.
In South Dakota, the possibility of Democrats applying this in the state raises a couple of thoughts.
I’m specifically wondering about Democrat Paula Hawks, who is anticipated to be entering the congressional race in South Dakota. There had rumors about her announcing a couple of months ago, but the latest I’m hearing is that she’s going to announce in July.
I can’t help but ask ‘why she pushed things back to the summer?’ Was it suggested to her to hang back for a couple of months while the Clinton effort got underway? Sharing some of the same views as Hillary Clinton, Hawks would seem to be a natural to jump on the Clinton bandwagon.
The looming question in red-state South Dakota would be whether or not running to the left of Obama is a winning formula here.
I don’t really know anything about Paula Hawks. Which tells me she isn’t the best recruit they could find.
My belief is that the party should nominate someone like Maggie Gilespie. Nancy Turbak Berry would be another good recruit. Maybe a well connected attorney who has a network in the business community. Aaron McGowan would be good too as the Minnehaha States attorney. They should look outside of the legislature for this race.
In fact I could envision a Herseth Sandlin/Turbak Berry ticket for governor in ’18 that would be hard to stop.
Why don’t the Dems look elsewhere?
I think they could make a dent in Noem if they run a good candidate acceptable to the business community and well connected across the state.
“In fact I could envision a Herseth Sandlin/Turbak Berry ticket for governor”
Any Rep. who is breathing and hasn’t kicked dog lately is going to defeat any Dem. ticket.
Face the reality.
Anyone who doesn’t take the threat of Stephanie Herseth being the first Democrat governor elected to office since Dick Kneip in 1974 is smoking some serious dope.
That would be a sad day for South Dakota. I don’t care how moderate Stephie claims to be, she is a democrat and would push the State in the wrong direction.
As someone who has met Hawks in the past, I agree that unfortunately the people who are best suited to do good work as an elected representative (Hawks) often lose to people who are well suited to campaign but are terrible for their constituency (Noem).
While I am excited for Hawks’ campaign and will donate time and energy towards helping her, I honestly just want Noem out. If I missed work to the degree that she skips out on congressional votes that pertain to South Dakotans, I’d be fired within the week.
How could the most dishonest, disingenuous, bitter, arrogant, and partisan woman in America have coattails ?
Dude, are you talking about Herseth or Hawks?
neither, it’s obvious if you read the story I’m talking about Clinton
Because most Democrat voters don’t care how much a candidate’s direction for the country may hurt their kids and grandkids so long as that candidate holds things together for their lifetime; the dumb thing is that Hillary won’t hold things together, she’ll destroy the country as much as Obama would if he could get a third term.
