Just caught this on facebook:

If you recall, I had a lot to say about this bill back then, because I’m in the camp that says 40 year old men should not be able to marry 16 year old girls because it’s legalized sex trafficking.   But, at the same time, I can’t help but point out Democrat propaganda leaves out a lot of information.

Such as that it was not 18 people who voted to kill Senate Bill 156. It was 19:

Yes, that’s Senator Red Dawn Foster who also voted to keep child marriage on the books. And she would be a Democrat. If we’re going to quibble, she would comprise 1/3 of the Senate Democrat Caucus.

I also notice that they’re leaving out another important piece of information. It was a Republican bill:

Yes, Democrat Rep. Kadyn Wittman was a sponsor. But the bill’s prime sponsor was Republican Senator Sydney Davis in the Senate and Republican Rep. Taylor Rehfeldt in the House.

Not such minor details if they’re going to going to try to throw rocks at Republicans in general.

  3. There was a time in SD history when you could not marry at age 16. So couples went across the border to MN and got married. If SD did change the age to 18, then 16-year-olds who find themselves pregnant will travel to MN. While I agree 16 is too young to marry or vote. Changing the law won’t stop them from marrying.

  4. 16 is too young. However, there should be an exception with parental consent for a small age range like 16-18.

        1. If a 16 and a 17 year old accidentally get pregnant, it unfortunately happens, if they want to marry and the parents consent, there should be an exception.

          Either 16 is the age of consent or it isn’t.
          Minors can get their ears pierced with parental consent and presence, otherwise not until age 18
          It is illegal for anybody under 18 to get a tattoo even with parental consent.

          What’s funny here is that under Obamacare, kids are not considered adults until they are 26, but the Democrats want them to have voting rights at 16.
          If we give anymore children the right to vote, parents will be financially responsible for their offspring for the rest of their lives. Obamacare’s provision keeping kids on their parents’ insurance policies happened because we let 18 year olds vote. Now they don’t want to repay their college loans.
          When does it stop?

    Fun fact: Red Dawn doesn’t caucus with the Dems so, your math is wrong…again.

  8. So it’s more important to the War College to identify that one democrat voted with the massive number of republicans VERSUS caring that the bill would have stopped 16 year old CHILDREN from being married. You may want to check your priorities…

    1. I think a lot of you are missing the bigger picture: the Minnehaha Democrats think they have found a hill they want to die on: 16 year olds should not be allowed to get married. Many of us agree.
      But nationally, the DNC is on record supporting the idea of giving 16 year olds the vote, and allowing even younger children to make medical decisions like obtaining contraception and puberty blockers, having surgical procedures like abortions, “top and bottom” surgery, and “social transitioning” with or without parental notification or consent.

      But don’t let them get married? Are they nuts?
      12 year olds can decide to take puberty blockers, 14 year olds can get birth control and have abortions, and they should have the right to vote at 16, but they aren’t mature enough to get married??

          I’m on a time-of-use rate plan and at 9 PM my rate drops from 16.84 cents/KWH to 5.15 cents/KWH

  9. RDF being in the wrong pales in comparison to the other 18, who are the majority of the GOP senate contingent. Thankfully there are some sensible moderates of both parties.

    Crying about 66% of Dems being sane compared to 43% of republicans is an incredibly stupid hill to die on.

    But you do you Pat. If you want to say more democrats than republicans are willing to stop sex trafficking in SD go nuts. Shout it from the rooftops.

      1. where were you in 2023 when HB 1080 was passed banning gender-affirming care for minors? 4 Democrats in the Senate and 7 in the House voted against it.

        The Democrats, even those in South Dakota, are all for kids deciding to do irreversible damage to their bodies.

        1. You mean like parents dropping off their kids at school and when they pick them up they are a different gender? Teachers and schools are performing surgeries on kids?

            The schools have been complicit with social transitioning, in some cases without parental notification, much less consent

            likewise, in some jurisdictions, minors are receiving contraception and abortion counseling without parental notification or consent

            The Democrats have been all about this.
            If you are a lifelong Democrat and didn’t know these are policies they have been supporting, it’s time for you to wake up.

            1. Standard misinformation and disinformation which one of the major goals is to defame, dismantle and defund our public school system.

            2. You should focus on the serious problem with Pedophilia, Child Pornography, sex trafficking and cover up issues within the MAGA movement and what used to be the GOP. It is not just nationally but here in the state too.

              1. Well said about MAGA ranks seemingly larded with hidden pedos. It seems to be the case and as they are caught it’s great to note none of them are trans or drag queens.
                RE: marrying age / voting age – – my mom was 17 when she married back in the 50s and the teens of the 50s and 60s built our nation and fought our wars. It’s good to be concerned about teens, but everyone comes into their adulthood at different rates, and I’m always leery of one-size-fits-all feel-good solutions that erode the personal freedom that everyone blathers endlessly about in this state.

                1. There’s a difference between laws that permit something to happen and laws that command that something happen.

        2. All in all more manufactured divisive distractions funded by out of state billionaires to keep us from working on real issues facing the state.

  11. Red Dawn Foster doesn’t caucus with the Dems and her voting record is tied more closely to the Freedom Caucus wing nuts than the Democrats. All because she didn’t become Minority Leader.
