Austin B. Hoffman Announces Candidacy for South Dakota Attorney General

Eureka, S.D. – Austin B. Hoffman announced today that he is running for Attorney General of the State of South Dakota, vowing to stand with law enforcement, ensure trust in the office, and uphold the rule of law with fairness and accountability.

“As South Dakota’s next Attorney General, my duty will be to uphold the rule of law, and ensure justice is applied equally to every citizen.” Hoffman said. “That means standing shoulder to shoulder with law enforcement officers, preserving the conservative values that make South Dakota strong, and leadership that puts the law above politics.”

Hoffman’s campaign will focus on a clear set of priorities:

  • Backing the Blue: Strengthening partnerships with sheriffs, police, and prosecutors to ensure criminals are held accountable.
  • Recidivism Reduction: Implementing smart policies to reduce repeat offenders and help offenders successfully reintegrate into society.
  • Drug Trafficking and Fentanyl: Working with federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement to stop interstate and reservation drug distribution networks.
  • Protecting South Dakota Families: Prosecuting crimes against young victims to the fullest extent of the law, protecting rural communities, and defending South Dakota’s way of life from federal overreach.

A lifelong South Dakotan, attorney, and community leader, Hoffman brings experience in prosecution, public policy, and enforcing the law without political prejudice.

“Our justice system must work for everyone – rural and urban, rich and poor, Republican and Democrat,” Hoffman added. “South Dakotans deserve an Attorney General who will enforce the law without apology and without political games. I will defend our freedoms, protect our families, and ensure that justice is served from Sioux Falls to Buffalo.”

Hoffman is currently the McPherson County State’s Attorney and serves on the South Dakota Open Meetings Commission and the South Dakota Board of Elections.

Hoffman will be traveling across South Dakota in the coming months to meet with voters, law enforcement officials, and community leaders. “The Republican candidate for Attorney General will be chosen at the Republican State Convention in June of 2026. I hope to earn your trust for that nomination and your vote next November.” Hoffman concluded.

      1. Charlie Hoffmans son – he certainly comes from good stock; a long line of public servants! I’m excited about his candidacy!

          1. I don’t think a family name should matter whatsoever, good or bad. What does matter is that Austin has proven time and again that he will fight for justice to be served. That is exactly what we need in SD – someone with a level head who upholds the law and has a history to prove it.

  1. Finally! A respectable candidate with the experience to do the job right. Hoffman is the one we need to support. The only logical successor to Marty Jackley of the current crop of AG candidates.

  2. Hopefully the whack-a-doodles will vote him out of the convention. Unfortunately, that probably won’t happen. He is definitely a great candidate, but they won’t vote him out to get on the ballot in Nov. Comes from a great family and would do a great job if given the chance.

    1. The whack-a-doodles will never vote him in. As it stands now, the idiots on the gop executive board in McPherson won’t even vote for him. It’s imperative to get normal common sense people to run for precinct committee men/women. Austin is a great choice! It’s too bad that a bunch of boobs get to choose the AG nominee for the entire state.

      1. whack-a-doodles? People that are looking out for McPherson county are now whackadoodles.

        Hoffman doesn’t know law.

Hoffman wastes tax payers money with his hire as states attorney

Hoffman convinced the lame Commissioners to break the law by rejecting petitions.

We can do much better than this clown.

        1. Oh Toad. You’re a sad angry old man. Anyone with half a brain who has been following the election insanity knows you’re dead wrong on this. That petition was in violation of state and federal law. Hoffman’s advice was spot on and he held his ground even though you nut bags were crucifying him. Which is exactly why he’s the perfect man for the job. You must have forgotten that two judges have upheld exactly what Hoffman was saying the entire time.

        2. Ohhhhh odd tod you’re so wrong. So so wrong on that petition and you must know it since you and the wacky gop had the opportunity to appeal the commissioners decision to a judge and guess what you all did?? NOTHING

You had the opportunity to get a court order to recount the 2020 ballots to prove all your crappy theories and guess what you did? NOTHING

This crowd is good at doing nothing and complaining, we need action and positive solutions. NOT more people content to complain and divide while doing NOTHING

        3. Yikes. Tod, you seem to be very good at complaining but very bad at actually doing something about the things that trouble you. I think you can do better, too, Tod.

  3. Mr. Hoffman is not the candidate this state needs.

So, coming from “good stock” makes him qualified? His father was a democrat who was removed from the McPherson County GOP group.

In 2024 he ran around the state via phone calls along with Ms Frankenstein (Gunther, Plamer, Nelson and Ashmore LLP law firm) convincing a certain amount of County commissioners to reject voting issue petitions. His advice made the commissioners directly VIOLATE state laws. So, we want an AG that advises people to break State Laws?

He likes to change dates on documents to make them legal again, without going through the correct process of document review.

He challenges citizens to take him to court knowing very well that the county citizens would have to pay the legal costs.

While this would be a “WIN” for McPherson county in his departure, it’s not a “WIN” for the state.

    1. McPherson resident here. We’re all sick of your propaganda. Violate the law? No. You crazies from McPherson just can’t handle the fact you were wrong. Get over it. Two judges have directly upheld exactly what Hoffman was saying the entire time. You guys wanted a second legal opinion because you didn’t like the advice Hoffman was giving. That second opinion was exactly the same as Hoffman’s. That bill was on you. Not him.

I watched the meeting online that you’re referring to “changing dates on documents.” I’m guessing you’re associated with the lady who wanted to give legal advice “as a former nurse.” Let’s give some background here. The commission was renewing the county comprehensive plan that was 20+ years old with the intention of eventually completely redoing the comprehensive plan and passing a new one. No one could find a digital copy of the old one to make changes to, so Hoffman recommended making a copy of the old one, whiting out the old dates, putting current dates in, and passing it with the new dates so there was a comp plan in place while a new one was being worked on. Which is exactly what happened and the document with new dates went through the exact process it was supposed to. It made sense. Unfortunately, the McPherson crazies weren’t smart enough to understand that.

    2. His father is a true Republican. Not an ultra far right nut job. He resigned from his position because he didn’t want anything to do with that group. Oddly enough, Mike Klipful called him after the fact and asked him if he would once again take the treasure position back. Which Charlie declined. So stop lying.

    3. A WIN for McPherson county? You people really to live in your own version of reality don’t you? As it stands now you basically have unfettered access to your states attorney, like him or not. He has civil dialog with you at meetings (which he is not required to) and takes your slings and arrows in stride. If he gets the AG position, who will be the states attorney for a county all of you have given such a negative profile too? Careful what you wish for. And don’t t say “anybody would be better than Austin”. Mr Hoffman is an excellent SA so yes, it could be far, far worse!

    4. Know who has a lot of money to challenge bad voting laws? The ADA. Why didn’t they try this movement in Minnehaha? They have more resources to fight back.

  4. This Hoffman legacy has done nothing but divide and intimidate McPherson county residents.

    1. The crazies in McPherson are directly responsible for this. Us normal residents in McPherson who don’t live in the crazies echo chamber are more than tired of the crazies whining at every meeting.

      1. Spot on that the very far right fringe has divided this county. The “my way or the hiway” shit with them is nauseating. Let’s be honest, the tactics they use to try and get people to capitulate to their ideology is left wing Pelosi, Schumer stuff. Tod, Edmunds county wouldn’t eat what you were serving them for years. While unfortunate that you thought a move to McPherson would lead to a better outcome, far too many people have heard your BS lines before. You probably should’ve tried to find a place in the northeast part of the county. You might actually get a few takers up there. I’d rather take advice from a man with no legs on how to win an ass kicking contest than legal advice from you!

    2. You’re 100% wrong. The far right residents of McPherson County have been talented and crazy enough to do that all on their own. It’s a strange talent they possess!

    1. How? Just going to sling mud and not have any hard facts to back it up? That screams maturity.

    1. Indeed, which is why every sane and truly qualified candidate for a Constitutional Office must be prepared to run in the general election as an Independent, since it’s unlikely that the current State GOP will nominate credible candidates at their State Convention (if they actually manage to have one).

    2. Notice how when someone calls them out with facts or simply disagrees with them it’s crickets….they really do think they are the majority. Probably why some are thinking of starting a petition to move the courthouse in McPherson to Eureka. These people have over extended their “hold” on what they perceive to be reality.

  5. Interesting comments and come backs which appear to be mainly relative only in McPherson County. South Dakotan’s who are in the Republican Party can all run to be a delegate in next years South Dakota State GOP Convention who will vote for their choice for SD’s GOP AG candidate to run in the November general election.
The Anti-Everything new wave folks now in charge of my home county will be hard pressed in explaining how they have improved any facet of life for our citizens.
It is really easy to go against everything, as the herd mentality group has done, and really difficult to come up with solutions to problems. The big problem arises when killing every new economic opportunity kills new outside flows of tax revenue coming in and the only answer is to abolish the property tax which would have brought in tens of millions of dollars had they been permitted to build and operate a new business.
South Dakota appears to all outside intellectual enterprising businesses to be closed for any business; which will take years to reverse. The damage has been done. Don’t make another mistake and allow these anti-everything folks to blasphemy a young candidate for AG who just follows the rule of law and not their herd mentality.

    1. I agree with everything you said Charlie. And now I just can’t help myself since you brought up “herd” mentality. When I was younger I worked on a ranch for several years. Let’s liken the NIMBY’s and election deniers ect. To the portion of the herd that needs to be culled.( bad bags, bad eyes, poor disposition and in some cases impotent) referring to the boy cows haha. The herd is healthy and strong. We just need to get involved in local politics and start managing things better.

      1. That’s too funny! I think this thread just exposed the McPherson county crazies as to who they actually are. They are bullies who can be put in their place with facts and common sense. Looks like McPherson still has plenty of that! Good luck Austin!

  6. As someone who does NOT live in McPherson County but who does know Austin personally, I can guarantee he would be a fantastic fit for AG. He is extremely hard working and doesn’t play games. You can interpret his work with whatever lens you choose, but one thing is for certain – he knows the law, and will fight like hell to uphold it.
