If you’re following the state legislative races, the battle is already underway.
An early mail piece has started hitting mailboxes in District 25 for House Candidate Carrie Sanderson, featuring an endorsement from former Governor Dennis Daugaard, and former first lady Linda Daugaard:

The field currently consists of Sanderson and Bart Sample (recycling the overused “faith family freedom” slogan), both of Flandreau for the seat being vacated by Jon Hansen, who is not allowed to run for the legislature again due to term limits. Hansen is currently preparing to lose the race for Governor.
No word on whether State Representative Les Heinemann has petitions out (his political facebook has not seen activity since February 2025), but I would anticipate he’s going to run, which would give us three candidates from Flandreau. I would not be shocked to see another name or two jump in, but that’s what’s happening at the moment.

I heard Pischke checks his mailbox every day for that Daugaard endorsement letter…
After the circus he witnessed on crossover day in the Senate, he must have decided he had an obligation to weigh in. Though last time he weighed in on an election, he hung Pierre and SD with Krusti.
I like Carrie, but this isn’t polished nearly what I expected from her. She’s rolling out an endorsement from a former governor who is deeply respected, the letter should have been more professional looking. No worries, I’m still bullet voting for Carrie!
It looked fine to me. Wasn’t the paper good enough? Are you one of those people who holds paper up to the light to check for a watermark?
Reminds me of a story in my family, my grandmother was grousing about the quality of a wedding invitation she had received from her cousin. It was not up to her standards. “It must be some cheap fly-by-night engravers who printed it.”
My mother didn’t have her bifocals on, so she handed it to my 6 year old sister. “Can you make out the tiny letters on the back of this?”
My sister peered at the paper and said “it says “Tee-eye-eff-eff-ay-en-why…”
“well they’ve really gone downhill!” my grandmother said, clearly disgusted.
So who printed the Daugaard letter? Would you have liked it better had it been an engraving by “Tee-eye-eff-eff-ay-en-why” printed on 100% cotton ragstock?
This looks to be more of a letter from the Daugaards and not from the campaign. It lists there address similar to letterhead. If it was on campaign letterhead, it would feel manufactured. She can now use this endorsement in more “professional” material going forward.
Carrie Sanderson would be a great legislator – Smart, knows the process and is accessible. Hope she wons!
