I certainly agree with Mark Mickelson’s recent letter criticizing Rep. Peterson. Her priorities are definitely not South Dakota families or public education. She is an extremist. As a fifth generation South Dakotan and a resident of district 13, my vote will go elsewhere.
I listened to her straight up lie about school administrator pay versus teacher pay on the Senate floor last session. Using Zip Recruiter.com for a data source is extremely sus as the kids say. She has ties to Private Schools and would just as soon burn down public education in South Dakota. Hopefully a quality candidate runs against her.
After listening to the House Education Committee yesterday, I concluded the less the legislature has to do with education, the better. Diane Miller almost (not quite) said as much. Almost said the quiet part out loud there.
The question yesterday was whether graduation credits should be earned by varsity athletes.
Lana kept fretting over “how would they be graded?” apparently unaware that the only reason for grade point averages in high school is to help college admissions officers decide if they want to accept a student, and probably label a varsity athlete as a 5.0 anyway..
Then there was the question of fairness, . for the kids who can’t make the varsity team. Where is the fairness for the kids who can’t handle Calculus? Doesn’t anybody care about them?
And then there was the question of discipline for bad behavior. Varsity athletes are punished for bad behavior, they get kicked off the team. Students in academic classes are never punished for anything. (Yeah, we know) What if a kid gets kicked off the team and then can’t get his PE credit in time for graduation?
Hasn’t anybody on the committee ever heard of summer school? And why not have summer session PE anyway? Sounds good to me.
Statistics about how kids who participate in sports are more likely to graduate were presented, by people who know perfectly well that correlation does not equate with causation, but they figure they can get away with that in the committee..
After listening to this I concluded that any matters involving education need to stop at appropriations. Just stop.
Awful, deceitful human being and unworthy the office.
She needs to be voted out of office! She has been a disgrace to District 13 and the South Dakota Legislature for years!
