Dems hire Chicago legal secretary as their spokesman

From a release:

The South Dakota Democratic Party announced today it has expanded staff in preparation for the 2016 election cycle and hired South Dakota native Michael Ewald to fill the new role of Communication Director.

A graduate of Watertown High School and the University of South Dakota, Michael Ewald returns to South Dakota from Chicago, IL where he previously served as Director of Debate at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools and legal assistant at the law firm Baker & McKenzie, LLC.

  1. 5,000 shares in SDDP stock with free entry to all non-fundraiser SDDP events and 10% off all SDDP mini-bar items

  2. One has to have some degree of sympathy for a PR person like Michael Ewald when you the vocal hate filled nutjobs & conspiracy theorists within the SDDP sabotaging whatever positive messaging he will try to communicate.

  3. The Ewalds are a family of high distinction and honor in H2Otown. A perfect choice. I’d be worried.

  4. Ewalds are a nice family. But there’s an interesting something going on here. I think this makes three young people the Dems have hired in the past six months to staff their office. How they pay for it aside, there’s a warning shot there for the GOP. I understand we have elected offices and they have staff and all that, but as a political party, where are we at in hiring a full time ex Dir and staff to build a party organization? The test or the message may come if they run credible, not just that March news release placeholder list, candidates for legislative races and win back some seats. If they don’t, then start up the funeral music and serve the casseroles

    1. The Democratic party in South Dakota has definitely assembled a young, talented, and smart team which should make the Republicans concerned. Being that 2016 is a presidential year, however, Democrats are bound to do better in ’16 than ’14. This reality will work to the new teams advantage, but an advantage Democrats from all factions should welcome – a reality which will unleash a momentum for 2018 when the Democratic party takes over the statehouse with the help of a brutal GOP gubernatorial campaign and Huether’s cash and candidacy.

I might note, there will be no casseroles or german cake for any of us unless my friends your game to attend a Democratic potluck fundraiser in the near future.

It would be nice right now if the Democratic party had a senate candidate, however. But since it only takes 700+ signatures to get on the ballot as a Dem in this state for a statewide race, I trust we will in time have a senate candidate (maybe two) and Democrats from all factions will unite behind that candidate and Paula to undo the present Republican dominance in South Dakota.

Today we may be “Dunkirk Democrats,” but the beaches of Normandy are soon to be before us.

      1. Sure hope those “Dunkirk Democrats” can swim since the boats are all broken down or at the bottom of the channel. 🙂

        1. Not only can we swim, but we can also uncannily hold our breaths timelessly as we wrestle with the submerged UBoats!….. 😉

      2. –Today we may be “Dunkirk Democrats,” but the beaches of Normandy are soon to be before us.

So, you’re the Nazis looking out to the English channel?

        1. If that is the case Operation Sea Lion and the air Battle of Britain didn’t work out so well for the Germans. At least the SD Dems can dream.

          1. As with actual Democrats, the “Dunkirk Democrats” failed to inform us which side they’re on!

  5. Didn’t Daugaard spend a few years in Chicago as well? I am not sure why the headline made that such an important part of the story …

  6. Winston, spin is the word of the day on your post. I don’t think I higher turnout in SD is good news for the Democrat ticket, if there is one, in the state. All the horn blaring aside, my point is that on paper they have made hiring moves that look like a political party. There’s a bunch of real estate between there and the goal line. So far, other than the hi rings, no sign of life, but time will tell

    1. Oh, I would agree it is still a “Hail Mary” for the Dems in ’16 and ;18, but if Noem runs for governor in ’18, we won’t even need the “Rogers to Rogers” reality for the Dems in 2018; and I believe that is the true and eventual effectual reality of this new smart Democratic team.

For those of you who hate football:

  7. One of the problems the SD GOP has had over the last 10 years is not having staff on a continuous basis. This leads to hardly any communication or organizing.

Yes the GOP wins in SD but it’s not because we are the most organized. We’ve won a few races because we were really organized like 2004 with Thune vs Daschle. A lot of it has started happening because of registration numbers and Barack Obama. We’ve had many good people on staff at the SD GOP but few of them stay long term and when the elections are over the party goes dormant.

The SDDP’s problem is that they hire staff that doesn’t get the job done. It’s not good enough to have staff. You need to have the right staff with the right plan.

    1. I like that the SDDP is hiring staff and building an organization. I can’t wait to see what kind of a machine the SD GOP builds. Roberts knows what she is doing and is getting ready for the big races in 2018.
