Governor Noem makes statement opposing Democrats’ study of the Supreme Court

As President Biden and other Democrats in Washington initiate an effort to “study” the US Supreme Court, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem issued the following statement via facebook this afternoon:

  1. I see an indiscriminate, virtually silent swell flowing its way to the political shores of the South Dakota Republican Party. If a candidate is on the beach ..

Beware whomever has been chosen to replace John Thune, who looks to be walked back in preparation for another role when people would have forgotten.

This beast can migrate from party to party.

It’s time to more seriously consider “flawed” candidates.

Those without pretty smiles, but strong backbones.

    1. Ed’s pretty sure this is the most brilliant remark ever made and Noem walks on water, by god.

  2. In 1936, Franklin Roosevelt, frustrated with the USSC, concocted a bold plan: he’d expand the Court, adding friendly justices who’d support New Deal programs.
Roosevelt’s proposal met instant & vociferous opposition. Supreme Court justices went public w/ their disapproval, and (according to Barbara A. Perry, director of presidential studies at the University of Virginia’s Miller Center) the American people rejected the idea. “Congress and the electorate viewed FDR’s ill-considered proposal as an undemocratic power grab,” she says. “It was never realistic that his Court Packing plan would succeed. Roosevelt badly miscalculated public reverence for the Court and its independence from an overreaching president.”
For 75 years, academic textbooks and scholars referred to Court Packing as one of FDR’s few missteps. We grew up studying the Court Packing episode in US history class, along with memorizing the “alphabet soup” of federal programs FDR put forward during his famous “first 100 days.”
Now, Dems want to add 4 left wing justices, so the Court will have 7 liberals, 5 conservatives, and Roberts. Dems have been threatening this for years. IMO, it’s a bad idea.
But what bothers me, really, is the dems’ (and their fawning media bootlickers’) disingenuous refusal to call it “court packing.”
Look, it’s court packing. They want to PACK the COURT with subservient jurists.
It’s not unconstitutional. Dems control congress. They have the political power to ram this through. And Dems are free to argue that packing the court with liberals would be marvelous. Perhaps the American electorate agrees. For better or for worse, that’s democracy.
Just don’t tell me it’s not court packing. To quote Michael Corleone, “It insults my intelligence.”
