Billie Sutton asking for donations to his “non-partisan” institute with Democrat fundraising org ActBlue

So, this just went out from Billie Sutton, asking for donations to his “non-partisan” leadership training group:

It’s interesting that the e-mail discusses the “The non-partisan Billie Sutton Leadership Institute,” at the same time they’re using the very, very partisan & specifically Democrat centered “ActBlue” as their fundraising mechanism.

What’s next? Will the Sutton leadership institute be giving their participants economic lessons from Bernie Sanders?

  1. I always liked Billie. He’s a very personable guy. However, if he’s in the Republican party he would have never run for Governor. There is and was at least a dozen or more people stronger on policy and governing than Billie was. Yes, being a nice guy got him down the road a ways, but the reality is when you’re batting .260 on a team that loses 100 games every year, you may be the only star on the team. Billie is a political star because his team has a short bench. Still a nice guy though.

      1. Nobody. Never said he wasn’t their best candidate last year. He is their star, even though he’d be just another legislator if he was an R.

        1. I disagree. Sutton was a great candidate in many ways. His personal story might have taken him even farther if he was a Republican in SD.

          1. I expect he’ll announce his candidacy in July. Good media coverage. Lots of DNC money.

  2. I checked the Secretary of State’s website and couldn’t find a corporate registration for the leadership institute, so I’m assuming it’s being run as a project of the existing Sutton for South Dakota entity. That assumption is bolstered by the leadership institute using the Sutton for South Dakota ActBlue donation portal to accept gifts that would be treated the same as campaign contributions – in other words, not tax deductible and publicly disclosed as political contributions if above the threshold.

    1. Good research as always.

Looks like a way to build up funds and not commit to any particular race…building a network of people. Not a bad way to build a party.
