Important point about Lock up Librarians Act – Does NOTHING to remove material from libraries. Only punches down on librarians

A member of the House wanted to remind me what the HB 1239, Bethany Soye’s Lock up Librarians bill actually does – nothing but that – it lock up librarians for doing their job:

I see you’re posting on the library bill. Thank you. One thing to remember when these people talk about the books in the libraries, the bill does nothing to remove ANY material from the library. When people say they don’t want this harmful material in their libraries, etc. Fine. But the bill today does nothing to stop ANY materials. It only goes after librarians.

It only goes after librarians. All it is and all it does is to punch down on public employees.

Call your Senator at 605-773-3821, and tell them to kill the Lock Up Librarians bill (HB 1239.)

  1. I can’t wait for a librarian to be charged for letting a minor read the Old Testament

      1. Soye shouldn’t write stupid bills if she doesn’t want people pointing out uncomfortable truths then.

  2. here’s another oddity about this. I heard a member of House leadership say that the bill doesn’t criminalize librarian conduct, and he challenged people to read the bill.

I did. That’s exactly what it does, and all it does (excluding style and form changes). So, the leadership person – who voted for it – clearly didn’t read and/or understand it!!

    1. even odder about the lying that these folks are doing to cover up what they are doing, is that they only need to read the title of the bill to understand the act. It starts “An Act to revise certain affirmative defenses…..” Maybe they don’t understand that affirmative defenses in criminal cases are what you have to use after you’ve been charged with the crime.

If they believed what they are also saying, about protecting minors – here’s what they would be doing, but it requires believing our South Dakota system that over 125 years of real South Dakotans have built – and you have to be able to read.

You’d make a list of the offensive books or passages and take it to the entity that owns the facility and ask you city council or school board to look into it. But, you don’t get to make quite so many crazy false statements, and again… you have to be able to read.

Maybe somewhere in South Dakota this has happened. I can assure you that Rep Garcia of New York DID NOT appear before either our school board, library board, or city council before voting to prosecute librarians.

unless they outlaw them before then, thank God we get to vote them out next year. One and done Baby

    2. That has obviously been the case on more than a few bills this year. When you have Sam Marty voting to effectively remove national guard funding, you can only assume there was a lack of understanding. I’m giving the benefit of the doubt there.
