Senator Davis Responds to USD Sanford School of Medicine Relocation
BURBANK, S.D. -Today, Senator Sydney Davis of District 17 issued the following statement regarding the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine’s decision to relocate its primary operations from Vermillion to Sioux Falls:
“The USD Sanford School of Medicine has been a proud part of Vermillion for decades. While its move to Sioux Falls will provide students greater access to hospitals and clinical training, we must ensure the school’s commitment to medicine remains strong. I will work with USD leadership to make sure this transition for faculty, staff, and students strengthens our ability to train physicians to serve all of South Dakota and beyond.”
Davis noted that medical students currently spend approximately 12 to 18 months in Vermillion completing foundational coursework before moving to Sioux Falls for the final two to three years of their medical education.
She expressed her appreciation for the faculty and staff who have built their professional and personal lives in Vermillion, calling them “a critical part of the medical school’s success.”
Davis emphasized that the move will also open the door for new academic opportunities in Vermillion, as USD plans to repurpose the space vacated by the medical school to meet other campus and program needs.

The move of South Dakota’s only medical school from Vermillion to Sioux Falls is an all-around win for South Dakotans. The article says the move “will increase the school’s competitiveness and improve clinic and research access for beginning medical students,” but more importantly, it will facilitate growth, which will become increasingly important as our population ages and more doctors are needed, especially in rural areas.
It will be great until they want the state to build them a new building in SF
Work with USD’s leadership to ensure their commitment to medicine remains strong? Is there any doubt?
I get you have to pander to your constituents, but to imply USD didn’t fully think this through or think out shortterm and longterm aspects is silly.
Senator Davis has done a lot for the med school. I don’t think that she meant anything except that she, and they, have a strong commitment to continue to do that.
Our state’s worst senator. Ineffective and to the left of Democrats.
I can’t imagine why she supports this. It’s bad for her district.
But it’s good for fund-raising, and that’s exactly why she supports it.
Imagine thinking her opinion MATTERS AT ALL lol
Jerks do what jerks gotta do.
Anyone listen to the press conference? Have they mentioned at all increasing the number of students at the med school? I haven’t seen that anywhere in writing. I think this move is generally a good move for South Dakota healthcare. The key to keeping physicians in South Dakota, of course, is actually admitting South Dakota students. Would be interesting to see those numbers as well. North Dakota is very strict on this, admitting only North Dakotans along with some Minnesotans in the Fargo area.
Gestring is right in that the University will grow and replace those 57 medical students that currently live in Vermillion. However, USD and Vermillion need to seriously act on housing. Other than Coyote Village, USD hasn’t built a dorm in maybe half a century or more? I might be wrong on that, but not too far off. Meanwhile, take a look at SDSU dorms. Housing matters to students and USD isn’t cutting it. Off campus is also a well known problem, but that will take some outside investment.
Can’t imagine why OBGYNs are leaving and we can’t more to move here.
Nope no reason at all.
How old is the building we built them in Vermillion? How much will this cost taxpayers to move them to Sioux Falls? And another new building? The folks in Vermillion knew this was coming. Before too long the entire campus will be in Sioux Falls.
That’ll never happen. If anything this gives USD the chance to move a bunch of the sciences into the med school buildings, Churchill-Haynes and the Lawrence buildings are in need of a major overhaul or demo.
I wonder how Vermillion feels about this.
Sadly another small town will get even smaller.
