Dusty Johnson turns in signatures for gubernatorial campaign – over 200 Team Dusty volunteers bring in over 5000 signatures!

Hot off the internets, Congressman Dusty Johnson’s campaign is on fire. More than 1 month early, Team Dusty has turned in what might be a record-breaking number of petition signatures in a statewide race as they brought petitions in to the SOS office today with over 5000 signatures, as gathered by a crew of over 200 volunteers.  (Full disclosure, I seem to recall notarizing a couple of them as team members came to my house looking for a notary.)

But, damn. Over 5000 signatures.  I don’t know if I’ve ever heard of a statewide campaign dropping off that many.

According to Secretary of State Monae Johnson’s website, a Republican candidate for Governor needs 2,171 signatures validated to be placed on the ballot, and they have to file petitions with the Secretary of State by March 31, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. central time or mail by Registered Mail by this date and time.  In 49 days’ time, they did more than twice that. (40 more days left to go, BTW)

It’s why the Dusty Johnson for Governor campaign team is going to be tremendously formidable in the contest.  It’s not just the money he has raised and banked – with a majority coming from South Dakotans. It’s the level of grassroot support that Dusty has cultivated and has been out there working.

The first candidate is in. Game on in the race for Governor.

  1. Trump endorsement incoming. I am fine with that. Will be satisfying to see the looks on the faces in the Doeden and Hansen camps when this goes down.

  2. The over-sized postcard we received yesterday features a photo of Dusty with Trump standing behind him giving a thumbs-up and the large text says “Dusty Johnson and President Trump Protecting South Dakota From China”

First thing I thought of was “Doeden’s not going to like this.”

  3. Wonder if the 5000 who signed for Dusty, knew what bills he writes and supports when he’s in Washington? He then lies to South Dakota citizens about what’s in the bills he writes allowing CO2 pipelines to be built.
He will not get my vote Trump or not….Hansen is the man that will stand with majority of SD who voted down CO2 carbon pipelines.

  4. Dusty has the signatures, the supporters, the money, the name recognition AND Trump. Doeden and Hanson seem to be concentrating on recruiting people to be precinct committee men an women, unaware of how the nominating process works.

Do the people currently running for precinct committee men and women who support other candidates understand they are signing up for the job of wearing “Dusty for Governor” t-shirts from June 3rd to November 3rd?

    1. Remaining “Anonymous” tells the public the amount of commitment the writer of the comment has for the candidate OR it’s the candidate themself/relative of them who is the author.

Maybe the precinct committee folks will loose or misplace their dusty buttons or their t-shirts will always be in the dirty laundry from June 3rd to Nov.3rd.

      1. the job of the precinct committee people is as follows:
“1. Under the supervision of the county chairman, they have the complete responsibility to conduct the political campaign in their precinct, such as compiling and updating voters lists, contacting voters, registering non voters, and general voter contact activities.
        2. Serve as voting members of the county central committee.”

What that means is, if your county chairman asks you to show up for a parade, put up yard signs, participate in a lit drop, and make phone calls, all on behalf of a slate of candidates you may not like, YOU DO IT.
You pull up your grown up panties, put a smile on your face, and go out and promote the most awesome slate of candidates ever nominated in the history of South Dakota, because THAT is the job YOU signed up for.

Read the job description in the SDGOP bylaws for yourself, Section III-F.

If you are not prepared to spend five months actively campaigning for a nominee you didn’t personally support in the primary, don’t ask for the job.

      2. Tess, over the years I have observed what can only be described as a disgusting level of hypocrisy on the part of precinct committee men and women, who are elected officials, having been voted into office via the primary, complaining about other elected officials not keeping their promises to the voters.
They rant about “ACCOUNTABILITY!” at the state conventions, and then disappear like cockroaches at dawn and don’t do the job they, themselves, were elected to do.

Accountability starts with all of us as individuals. If you aren’t going to do the job you were elected to do, don’t complain about anybody else.
