Former State Rep. Alex Jensen thinking about a return to public service. Could Sioux Falls handle a return to civility?

From the Argus Leader, it appears that former State Representative Alex Jensen is exploring a run for office this next year for the Sioux Falls City Council:

Alex Jensen earlier this month filed a statement of organization with the Sioux Falls City Clerk’s Office, formally become the first candidate in the 2020 municipal election for City Council.

Jensen’s filing designates him as a candidate for the one at-large position up for grabs in the next election, which has been held by Councilor Theresa Stehly since 2016.

and…

“I’m not running against anyone,” he said. “I’m considering this run because I just have a positive attitude about and the belief that in Sioux Falls there’s a lot of opportunities, and Sioux Falls has given me all the opportunities that I’ve ever needed.”

If Jensen ran against and defeated Stehly, would Sioux Falls be able to handle it if they didn’t have a City Council Member constantly spreading misinformation, grandstanding, attacking city employees, and having juvenile Facebook slappy-fights with people?

We might get to find out.

  1. I’ve volunteered to serve as Alex’s campaign treasurer. We have gotten a lot of great feedback and donor interest in his campaign given how early it is in the process. Thanks for the nice write-up, Pat!

      1. There are all sorts of people, including business leaders in our community, behind Alex’s campaign but our only “special interest” is the interest in making Sioux Falls a great place to live, work and play.

For the record, I’ve never asked for any handout, special deal or corporate welfare from any government anywhere.

  2. I had the opportunity of serving with Alex in Pierre. He will be a wonderful addition to Sioux Falls government. He loves Sioux Falls and if you love something you take care of it. Alex will be a wonderful addition.

    1. Theresa is conservative……she is a watch dog for the taxpayers. Just google her.

        1. Speaking of not a conservative… Tara, any idea which race Lora plans on losing next?

            1. Well, my name is right there above the date and time. Waiting for your response.

    2. What positions did he take or votes did he make to make you of that opinion? I am asking seriously as I don’t know much about Mr. Jensen.

      1. Anonymous – Alex is a moderate Republican. To the hard-right/tea-party/preschool-research-is-a-communist-conspiracy crowd, Alex is a “liberal.”

  3. Good to see Alex getting involved in public service again. He was a thoughtful, hard working legislator.

      1. Many of us are unable to read Theresa’s Facebook page. She has an unfortunate tendency to block those that disagree with her methods.

        1. Show me where she blocked anybody. Look at all the people she draws in. They feel someone is finally taking an interest in them. You need to show me some facts.

  4. This is sad. Teresa has done more as a city counselor to raise awareness of the freaking waste and abuse of our taxpayer dollars in Sioux Falls than all the other counselors combined. The only problem people have with her is the stink she makes about everything. I called her to discuss my displeasure with the way she handled the city auditor issue as she had some good points, I expressed to her not everything is a hill to die on. My question is, our politicians at a local, state, and federal level just don’t seem to be looking out for us. Someone has to step up and rage against the machine that is not working for Americans anymore.

Over the last 6 years we have committed money to an Aquatics center, Premiere Center, City Admin Building, and that FIASCO of a parking ramp. The parking ramp was so blatantly obvious it was a bad deal but, we continued to move on it with a new administration. None of these items were needed but, were prioritized over items like streets and the Water treatment facility for years which will cost us 260 Million. I have no clue about this guy but, we all know the power brokers in Sioux Falls don’t want us pesky tax payers putting the cobash to fund these items. The average citizen (the middle class) are getting are @ss kicked up and down to pay for Sh!t we don’t need. My property taxes have gone up 25% over the last 5 years to pay for more and more stuff. The county is kicking my @ss and now the city is going to have to find ways to pay for all this crap we keep getting. My water bill each month is pushing $100 in the non summer months and its my 2nd highest utility and I have 3 people who live in my house. I can only image when we HAVE to upgrade the water treatment and that bill of 260 Million comes due what that is going to look like. This is not a political issue this is a greed issue and people are making off with tax dollars at our expense. If you disagree that Sioux Falls is not wasting money left and right you are not paying attention

Example – The city just spent 20k to have someone design a logo for recycling. You can have a logo designed for less than $300 bucks and I bet you could have farmed it out to STI, USF, DSU, or any number of High schoolers to get it done for free.

    People wake up
